Onegai shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei and Deshi! We have a number of events to report for the last few months:
Black Belt Workout in New York 7 December, 2008
This year the weather smiled (okay, that’s stretching it–but we weren’t completely snowed out this year) and a number of us were able to attend this wonderful annual event, including Sensei Daniel Gobillot, Sensei Chris Gobillot, Sensei Cindy Gobillot, Sensei Jean Gobillot, Mr. Steve Parsons, Ms. Cathie Parsons, and Dr. Nancy Owen.
Doshakai / Kampai 2 January, 2009
We had not had one of these ceremonial events in several years, and it was a joy to train together for the first time in 2009 and then sit and toast the new year and our continued vigor as a dojo. Attending: Daniel Gobillot, Chris Gobillot, Cindy Gobillot, Lou Ruvolo, Mary McKitrick, Vern Fath, Steve Parsons, Cathie Parsons, Nancy Owen, Derek Marcus, Tom Marcus, Tracy Magdalene, Lisa Salo, Trevor Salo, Michelle Kenseth, and Kenneth Mannin.
The day after the Doshakai we were honored to receive visitors from Pennsylvania: Lisa and Brian Messinger and their children Alex and Michaela. They attended Ms. Lisa Harvey’s Saturday morning class. This was their first time at our dojo and we look forward to many future visits! Domo arigato to the Messinger family for including the Northampton dojo in their travel plans.
Black belt workout and review 17 January, 2009
Deshi from the Northampton Ueshiro Pine Forest Karate Dojo and Boston Ueshiro Chinatown Dojo were reviewed and promoted at this event. A workout and review were conducted under the direction of Kyoshi Michael Mackay. The board of judges included Sensei Daniel Gobillot, Go-Dan, Sensei Preston Powell, Yon-Dan, and Sensei Emiliano Mazlen, San-Dan. Visitors included Sensei Michael Margulis and Ms. Kristin Domminger, Ni-Dan. Domo arigato to Ms. Domminger for taking many excellent photographs. Domo arigato gozaimasu to all participants and especially to those who traveled from other dojo, and most especially to Kyoshi Mackay for the inspiring workout and test.

Black belt workout and review, Pine Forest Karate Dojo, Palisades, NJ 1 February, 2009
The following karateka traveled from Northampton to the Pine Forest Karate Dojo for their black belt workout and review:
Jean Gobillot, Mary McKitrick, Steve Parsons, Cathie Parsons, and Nancy Owen. We were treated to a workout and review of the highest caliber, as well as extraordinary hospitality from Kyoshi David Seeger. The students who were reviewed are greatly to be congratulated for their performance and stamina. Domo arigato gozaimasu to Kyoshi Seeger for his invitation and generosity. We look forward to training with you again very soon.
Rank Promotion 21 February, 2009
A rank promotion for Northampton Ueshiro Pine Forest Karate and Boston Ueshiro Chinatown dojo were conducted at the Northampton dojo on this date. The following were tested and promoted: Ralph Miller – Ro-Kyu Michelle Kenseth – Ni-Kyu

Talent Show 27 February, 2009
The dojo participated in a talent show at Northampton High School to raise money for the high school band’s trip to Washington, DC in May, where the band will perform at the Kennedy Center. The dojo demonstration was organized and choreographed by Mr. Vern Fath, Ni-Dan, and was enthusiastically received by the audience. Kata, bunkai, weapons, body testing, and breaking were demonstrated.

Domo arigato gozaimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, Sempai, all fellow Deshi for the continuing opportunities to train together throughout the year. May we meet many times in 2009.
