Ueshiro Suntree

Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo

Onegaishimasu,

The Ueshiro Suntree YMCA Dojo in Florida continues to move forward (zen-shin). Our two and a half years old dojo is gaining more experience and variety on the deck with belts of all colors/ranks. We recently promoted 19 new deshi. We now have a solid contingent of Brown Belts and Green Belts. Our three new Brown Belts each selected their traditional weapon of choice to expand their training-two selected the Tuifa and one selected the Nunchaku. We need to get more beginners on the deck. Our deshi are inviting their friends and co-workers to try our training. The YMCA continues to provide an influx of new members; however, the numbers of new students has dropped, perhaps due to the economy. Nevertheless, we must double our efforts to capture new students and propagate our Karate-Do art. I plan to produce some T-signs and place them out by the main road for advertisement soon.

We are now offering five weekly classes, as shown on the integrated central Florida schedule below, among the 21 overall weekly classes we collectively offer in our region consisting of six dojo/clubs under Hanshi’s leadership. Sensei Connie Rutkowski, recently promoted to Sandan, teaches our Wednesday afternoon class, which caters to our young students after school. Our newly promoted Brown Belts (Steve Quirion, Rick Cupoli, and Danielle Delgado) are expanding their learning by teaching our Wednesday evening class. Sensei Kurt Tezel continues to teach our Friday early morning class, despite his busy schedule as Shihan of both the new Titusville YMCA Dojo and the Merritt Island Tropical Elementary Karate Program. I teach the Sunday and Monday classes and participate in the other classes including frequent visits to Hanshi’s Viera Dojo.

Recently, we conducted our early Friday morning class at the nearby Patrick Air Force Base Beach, starting in the dark before sunrise (see photos). This was true “Joy and Vigor”!

Domo arigato to Hanshi and the Kyoshi[s] for their tenacious leadership and teachings on the path of our Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, and domo arigato to all of you who recently visited us for the special February weekend of training in Florida. You are most welcome to visit our dojo anytime and enhance our training.
